From 15 to 20 September 2019, the annual meeting of the ISO TC106 Dental International Standards Organization was held in Osaka, Japan.Kevin Zhang, General Manager of DPR New Materials Technology CO., LTD, attended the meeting as a representative of the company and expressed his views and put forward constructive opinions in the revision and development of many dental standards. Delegates from different countries have expressed their appreciation for the achievements of DPR in technology development and hoped that DPR would make an active contribution to national and international dental standards. The annual meeting focused on the revision and development of the following standards.
On 16 September, at the SC2/WG1 Working Group on Restorative Dental Materials - Dental Ceramics: the main discussion was on the test methods and evaluation criteria for fracture toughness of dental ceramic materials. The experts listed the fracture toughness test results of manufacturers such as VITA and 3M and compared them with the evaluation criteria of the previous draft standard, concluding that the fracture toughness test results are highly dependent on the sample preparation method and that different sample preparation methods can lead to differences in test results; shared and discussed their research on the use of the FIB (focused ion beam) cutting technique for ceramic sample preparation. It is discussed that fracture toughness test results using the FIB technique are the most consistent, and microscopic analysis of notch and crack extension morphology also shows superiority. However, other experts have questioned the high cost of specimen preparation using the FIB technique and therefore it is limited to research institutions with a certain level of competence. In the SC8/WG4 Working Group on Mechanical Properties of Dental Implants: Revision of the standard 14801:2016 Dynamic load testing of dental-intraosseous implants, the level of measurement of critical areas in the worst conditions in the implant range, low temperature degradation of ceramic implants, fatigue testing and other topics were discussed; new recommendations for test methods were proposed to measure the retention force of implant systems; the presentation reports illustrate the mechanisms of fatigue problems in ceramic materials.
On 17 September, DPR participated in the SC8/WG1 Working Group on Implant Materials for Dental Implants: several questions on Standard 22794 Bone Filling and Bone Augmentation Implant Materials for Dental-Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, a presentation was made on the animal testing section of Standard 5.5.4 as a response to the requirements for improving animal welfare (3R requirements: replace, reduce, improve); the project leader requested that those conducting in vitro testing of bone The meeting also discussed the basic requirements for animal models of oral bone filling materials; the convener proposed future work on standards for in vitro testing in the oral cavity; the issue of metal ion precipitation was discussed in relation to CMR (carcinogenesis, mutagenesis and toxicity) and the data and findings will be presented at next year's annual meeting. The results of the study will be presented at next year's meeting. At the SC8/WG6 Working Group on the Preclinical Evaluation of Dental Implants: in relation to the revision of standard 19421 Dental-Implant Systems: DPR was agreed to change the title of the standard to 'Requirements for the preclinical evaluation of dental-intraosseous implant systems'; a special project group was established to carry out data collection and systematic literature searches for the evaluation of the fatigue resistance of implant systems. For the surface properties of implants, information was shared with the meeting convenor as a proposal for a new proposal.
On 18 September, DPR participated in the SC8/WG7 Working Group Meeting on the Evaluation of the Mating Compatibility of Dental Implant Systems: Changes were made to the standard 22683 Dental-Implant Systems for the mating test of implants and abutments; questions were raised about its method of applying radiographically penetrating materials to reveal mating gaps based on more interpretation of the relevant CT image data; due to the fact that there are currently implant components on the market that are produced by different manufacturers The meeting convener suggested that the 36-month project period be extended to 48 months to obtain more information due to the fact that different components are currently produced by different manufacturers on the market, resulting in different dimensional and tolerance requirements for each component. At the TC106/WG10 Working Group on bio-compatibility of Oral Materials: the meeting was attended by 55 delegates from 12 countries and discussed issues related to standards for the biological evaluation of oral materials, unanimously adopting ISO 7405:2018 as amended at last year's annual meeting and enabling the publication of the standard; however, there was no agreement on the proposal by Prof. KP Stefan et al. to establish a method for sampling wear debris from oral materials, and the sampling method will probably be added as a proposed amendment to ISO 7405 in Section 6.5 Sample Preparation or in an appendix. The WG10 working group continues to develop a standard method for sampling abrasive debris from oral materials, based on the recommendations of the Osaka meeting to design a device for generating abrasive debris; in vitro testing of the heat generated during the curing of dental restorative materials and transmitted to the pulp needs to be evaluated for clinically relevant methods and may be proposed as a future modification to ISO 7405.
On September 19, at the meeting of SC9 Plenary dental computer-aided design and manufacturing system: WG2 terminology, the revised draft of the vocabulary in the process chain from dental CT to CAD/CAM of standard 22710 dentistry - oral prosthesis was adopted; WG3 digital equipment, standard 20896-1 Dentistry-impression equipment, the revised draft of the first part of precision evaluation method and the second part of precision evaluation method of implant equipment were submitted for discussion by experts; WG4 interactivity, the revised version of the standard ISO 18618:2018 dental CAD/CAM system interactivity was submitted and discussed; WG6 cutting block, standard 18675 Dentistry - modification proposal of zirconium block for cutting was submitted and discussed. At the plenary meeting of SC7 Plenary oral care products, the revised draft of the following relevant standards was mainly discussed: standard 20126 ed.3 dentistry - manual toothbrush - general requirements and test methods; 20127 ed.2 Dentistry - physical properties of electric toothbrush; 17730 ed.2 Dentistry - fluorinated materials; 10873 Dentistry - Binder materials
